that smile …

Some of you have already heard my gripe for the day, but I haven’t given you the happy twist, yet! I got about 4 hours sleep last night via two 2 hour “naps,” and am currently dragging through the day. I realized nothing can be done; welcome to the harsh reality of parenting a 2 month old. No big deal; every parent has nights like this.

I went to bed around 10:15 pm and Lily had me up at midnight. I made it back to sleep around 1:00 am, only to get up again at 3:00 am. After that, someone didn’t want to go back to sleep, but thought it might be more fun to smile and play. Ha! Okay, fair enough. Cody joined in on the fun, too, so it was a big ol’ party downstairs – Lily, Cody and mommy. I got Lily dressed, watched Cody graze outside, started laundry, cut tags off Lily’s clothes so they could be washed (The next size up … eek!), made lunches … and more that I’m forgetting. We used our awake time to our advantage!

While getting so little sleep is wearing on me for sure (I’m a bear! 8 weeks without one full night takes its toll on a gal.), it has its bright spots. One of my favorite moments every night at these ungodly hours is get Lily out of her crib. I don’t know why, but there’s so much joy in picking her up and snuggling her as we head for the couch so she can chow down like a champ on her bottle – the complete focus of her attention. Her nighttime “I’m hungry” cries are different than her daytime cries, and there’s something so sweet and innocent about it. I appreciate the moment every time I pick her up in the middle of the night even though I don’t always necessarily enjoy being awake.

This morning, I got another simple pleasure from our little Peanut. It was somewhere between 3:45 and 4:15 am when I finally surrendered, realizing that there would be no more sleep for us. It was at that point that I decided to get her dressed and ready for the day. I had planned to change her diaper anyway, so I figured I might as well kill 2 birds with one stone. When I put her down, she almost instantly gave me the biggest grin. IMG_8383 Yeah, I totally love this girl. It’s like she knows she’s drained just about every ounce of energy from my body and just wants me to be happy. I know she doesn’t know it, but she puts this awesome positive spin on things and I just can’t get enough!

In that moment, we played, and she continued to smile and “talk” to me in her Lily-chatter way, and I enjoyed every second of it. This may be the hardest job I’ve ever had and the most exhausting thing I’ve ever done, but I wouldn’t trade one bit of it for the world!!! Oh how I love that precious smile!
